Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

Etsuo Chosa, Chair (Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Miyazaki Hospital)

It has been 18 years since I became the third professor of the department. I strive to promote academic collaboration and also collaboration between our medical and academic staff and representatives of government and industry.

Our department focuses on community-based medicine and is dedicated to enhancing education, practice and research in the field of trauma and diseases of locomotive organs that form extremities and spine. (joints, bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves).

First, in education we try to train humane doctors in our undergraduate program. Regarding locomotive organs, our students are engaged in learning basic conservative therapy and surgical therapies including pathema, diagnosis, and rehabilitation through our core curriculum and clinical clerkship. After graduation, it is mandatory for them to become orthopedic surgeons or physiatrists and also acquire a subspecialty.

Second, in practice, the number of surgical procedures reached 1500 cases in 2021, and this is the highest number among public 600-bed hospitals. As an advanced treatment hospital, we provide highly advanced medical treatment of joint diseases, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatism, spinal diseases, sport injuries and trauma. Also as a leading Miyazaki hospital, we make great efforts to contribute to community medicine including emergency medical care. Moreover, an emergency and critical care medical center with doctor helicopter, and a rehabilitation center have been established. We provide advanced treatment to patients suffering from various disorders or diseases by separating them into our specialized groups according to the affected site of diseases in patients.

Last, we do research on a wide variety of diseases, including osteoarthritis, trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and tumors, and our patients range from children to the elderly. For this reason, our research includes many different topics, but our main focus is on clarifying the pathology and developing a new treatment for arthrosis of locomotive organs, rheumatoid arthritis and sports injuries.

  1. Construction of “Sport Medicalland Miyazaki” and “Locomo the World Miyazaki”
  2. Clarification of causes and mechanism of orthopedic diseases and locomotive syndrome
  3. Development of new treatment and diagnostic method for musculoskeletal diseases (locomotive organ diseases)

We have been achieved successful results with collaboration among industry, academia and government, and grants from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. We will put more effort into clinical study, including basic research, while promoting collaborations with other faculties and departments in basic and specialized fields, as well as collaboration among industry, academia and government. Also, since Tokyo was awarded the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020, locomotive syndrome has been addressed as a part of national policy. We are eager to make an active contribution.

Under our university slogan, “Think Globally and Start with the Neighborhood”, we will continue to contribute to community medicine by strengthening cooperation with our affiliated hospitals in order to provide advanced medical treatment to our patients. Moreover, I believe cultivating capable doctors with good personalities and highly developed skills facilitates clinical study and research. We strive to bring the results to our open and unique clinical surgery lectures, while promoting collaboration within the university and with outside the university as well.

In conclusion, our orthopedic alumni association has reached 200 members and we have affiliated hospitals throughout Miyazaki as well as in other prefectures. The natural environment of Miyazaki is beautiful, and there are tremendous opportunities you can pursue, with a wide variety of clinical study and research. Why not work with us? We look forward to your participation.
