Faculty of Medicine University of Miyazaki

Message From Dean

The University of Miyazaki’s Faculty of Medicine was initially established in 1974 as Miyazaki Medical College. The School of Nursing was established in 2001 and in October 2003, Miyazaki Medical College was merged with the University of Miyazaki. Since then we have produced many excellent medical professionals and researchers.

Based on the slogan of the University of Miyazaki, “Look at the World; Start with the Community”, we are doing our utmost to provide consistent education to foster medical professionals who can contribute to local healthcare in Miyazaki, while also aiming to train medical professionals and researchers who can be active on the world stage. Graduates of the School of Medicine are active in a wide range of fields as clinicians, researchers, or educators who contribute to the development of medicine and the improvement of welfare. Graduates of the School of Nursing are working as nurses, public health nurses, midwives, researchers, or educators, and are contributing to the development of nursing science and social welfare.

In 2018, the School of Medicine was accredited by the Japan Accreditation Council for Medical Education (JACME), which means that it is recognized as a medical education institution that complies with the global standards of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). Under the student exchange agreements, we send our students to partner universities for their pre-clinical, clinical electives, and nursing practicum in order to foster medical professionals with an international perspective. We also receive students from partner universities, and these exchanges benefit both sides.

The Graduate School of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine is the first of its kind in Japan to integrate general medicine and veterinary medicine and is promoting distinctive interdisciplinary and cutting-edge research in the field of life sciences, including emerging and reemerging infectious diseases. We have accepted many international students in these graduate school programs and have been able to conduct collaborative research with these graduates and their institutions. Working together, we are able to achieve numerous positive outcomes, such as publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, collaboration in international conferences and projects, as well as signing exchange agreements to strengthen the relationships between many universities around the world.

As a pioneering initiative in the region, we have established a comprehensive perinatal medical system that covers the whole of Miyazaki Prefecture as a single perinatal medical network, and we have started a new developmental brain disorder research project in line with this system. In addition, we are supporting the goal of making Miyazaki a prefecture known for its sports by providing medical support and promoting sports medicine through the Miyazaki Sports Medical Support System with the benefit of a warm and sunny climate. Furthermore, in order to extend healthy life expectancy in a super-aging society, we are also actively engaged in distinctive clinical and research activities rooted in the local community, such as interdisciplinary research projects in collaboration with other experts to maintain the function of the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems.

The Faculty of Medicine of the Miyazaki University celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024. We welcome students who are full of creative energy and who can understand and respect diverse values, and we hope that they will go on to become excellent medical professionals who are trusted by society and who can play an active role in various fields around the world.
