Research Overview

Ribosomes, the cellular machinery for protein synthesis, consist of over 80 components (proteins and RNA), with more than 200 factors involved in their assembly. Recent studies have revealed that abnormalities in these components or biogenesis factors lead to various disorders known as “ribosomopathies,” yet their underlying pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. We utilize zebrafish to develop disease models and aim to elucidate these mechanisms at the molecular level.

Projects

Diamond-Blackfan Anemia (DBA)

A congenital pure red cell aplasia, one of the ribosomopaties, caused by mutations in ribosomal protein (RP) genes. The biggest mystery is why mutations in RP genes, which are ubiquitously expressed, specifically lead to anemia.

Ribosome Defects and Tumorigenesis

Patients with ribosomopathies face a higher risk of developing cancer. We try to understand the link between aberrant translation and oncogenesis at the molecular level.

Open-access Database

We curate and provide comprehensive data on RP genes and snoRNA genes (which guide rRNA modification) across various species. A vital resource for researchers worldwide!
