Cardiovascular Surgery

Overview of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Division of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Miyazaki University: In addition to surgical treatment for all adult cardiac and great vascular diseases and peripheral vascular diseases, we also perform pediatric cardiac surgery for patent ductus arteriosus in premature infants and congenital heart disease in collaboration with pediatricians and obstetricians/gynecologists.

Particularly Strong Areas

  1. Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting for Ischemic Heart Disease: We select the optimal surgical approach based on patient risk factors, utilizing multiple arterial grafts and performing either cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass or off-pump bypass surgery without CPB.
  2. Surgical Treatment for Ischemic Cardiomyopathy: In addition to coronary artery bypass grafting, we perform left ventricular reconstruction and mitral valve repair to improve cardiac function and prognosis.
  3. Surgical Treatment for Myocardial Infarction Complications: We actively perform emergency surgery for cardiac rupture, ventricular septal rupture, and papillary muscle rupture.
  4. Valvular heart disease surgery: We select between artificial valve replacement and valve repair based on the patient’s condition to perform the optimal surgery. For mitral regurgitation, we perform mitral valve repair using a right thoracic mini-incision approach. For aortic valve stenosis in elderly patients, we perform transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in collaboration with the cardiology department as a heart team. We have achieved favorable outcomes, reaching 300 cases by October 2025.
  5. Surgical Treatment for Aortic Diseases: For all aortic diseases, including thoracic aortic aneurysms, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, we determine the appropriate approach—open thoracotomy/laparotomy or stent graft placement—based on the patient’s condition and perform the optimal surgery.
  6. We perform pediatric cardiac surgery for congenital heart diseases such as patent ductus arteriosus in infants weighing less than 1000g, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, and tetralogy of Fallot. We also perform surgery for adult congenital heart diseases.

Ongoing Clinical Research: We are conducting research in collaboration with the Department of Pathology and the Department of Physiology to analyze factors influencing the long-term outcomes and treatment results of mitral valve repair.
