Our clinical services include oral surgery, general dental treatment, oral health management, and perioperative oral care for patients undergoing medical and surgical treatment in other specialties. We have established a <em><strong>Perioperative Oral Care Center<\/strong><\/em> to provide preoperative oral evaluation and intervention for most surgical patients treated at our university hospital, we aim to reduce postoperative complications particularly pneumonia and contribute to shorter hospital stays and improved recovery. Located in a regional area of Japan, our institution serves as a key referral center for complex cases that cannot be managed elsewhere. In addition, our <em><strong>Advanced Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate Center<\/strong><\/em> provides coordinated, long-term care for patients with cleft-related conditions, from prenatal counseling through surgical, orthodontic, and functional rehabilitation into adulthood. We routinely treat:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4847\" height=\"2853\" src=\"http:\/\/www.med.miyazaki-u.ac.jp\/home\/english-demo\/files\/2026\/08\/41-IMG_8560.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-348\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Oral and maxillofacial cancers<\/li><li>Benign tumors and cystic lesions<\/li><li>Maxillofacial trauma and fractures<\/li><li>Congenital anomalies such as cleft lip and palate<\/li><li>Severe odontogenic infections and jaw deformities<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our department maintains a broad clinical scope without restriction to a single subspecialty. Close collaboration with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Otolaryngology\u2013Head and Neck Surgery enables multidisciplinary treatment tailored to each patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Areas of Expertise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A major focus of our practice is the preservation and restoration of oral function after surgery, regardless of disease type. We emphasize maintenance of mandibular function, occlusion, and postoperative quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For patients requiring segmental jaw resection, we perform vascularized bone reconstruction\u2014most commonly using scapular osteocutaneous flaps\u2014to restore mandibular continuity. These reconstructions are designed to support subsequent dental implant rehabilitation, enabling stable occlusion, functional mastication, and long-term structural and esthetic recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Clinical Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our department is actively involved in translational research aimed at improving both oncologic outcomes and postoperative function. Current investigations include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Development of imaging- and pathology-based biomarkers to predict prognosis and metastatic risk<\/li><li>Quantitative imaging approaches to support more precise and less invasive treatment planning<\/li><li>Strategies to optimize functional reconstruction following tumor resection<\/li><li>Long-term evaluation of oral function, occlusal rehabilitation, and patient quality of life<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>International Collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We welcome collaboration with clinicians, researchers, and trainees worldwide.
