JES 2018 – like-minds meet in MIYAZAKI

The endocrinology community gathered in Miyazaki in April for the Japan Endocrine Society 2018 (JES 2018).  More than 2,600 delegates from 14 different countries attended the 3 days of talks and lively debates organized by the Japan Endocrine Society.

One of the most enjoyable plenary talks was given by Kenji Kangawa from National Cardiovascular Center Research Institute, Osaka, who provided an overview of his research on peptide discoveries and their clinical application.  Other plenary sessions that had much interest from the delegates, included the role of regulatory T cells in immunological disorders and host defense by Shimon Sakaguch, Osaka University and an art critic lecture about conceptional differences between Japanese picture and western one by the Order of Cultural Merit recipient Shuji Takashina.  Of the many excellent symposia, those on immune-related adverse events in endocrine organs, developments of diagnostic understanding of primary aldosteronism, endocrine emergencies, and fertility treatment in endocrine disorders were particularly popular.  Three president symposia presented by 7 speakers provided a great deal of attention to the audiences.  In the New Technology sessions, 9 basic researchers provided an overview of new techniques for their clinical counterparts.  The English oral session was first contrived in the annual meeting of JES.  Out of 42 abstracts from abroad, 12 were presented in the session together with the same number of abstracts from Japanese participants.  Eight facilitators gave comments and advices to encourage young speakers.

Commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency, Daichi Suzuki and Governor of Miyazaki Prefecture, Shunji Kono talked sports of efficacy and good influence in the daily life organized in the special forum.

Two social events, the Resident Clinical Tournament and Miyazaki Night were fantastic and extraordinarily enjoyable.

All the delegates from medical students and residents to established endocrinologists, and basic researchers have enjoyed well-organized scientific programs.  Overall the endocrinologists of all disciplines to exchange ideas and develop new collaborations.
